About Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky sits on Avacha Bay on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, framed by the Home Volcanoes – Avachinsky at 2,741 metres, dormant Koryaksky at 3,456 metres, and Kozelsky behind them – three stratovolcanoes that line the city's eastern skyline and often steam on cold mornings. Just east of town, the 30-kilometre black volcanic sand of Khalaktyrsky Beach faces the open Pacific, surfable in late summer when thick-wetsuit swells settle. The ocean peaks at 12-14 °C in August, with Yelizovo airport 30 minutes by road.
