About Anchorage
Anchorage sits on Cook Inlet's eastern arm, with the 4,000-metre peaks of the Chugach Mountains rising directly behind the city and the Turnagain Arm carrying one of the world's largest tidal bores — a six-to-ten-foot wall of water that local surfers ride twice daily. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail traces eighteen kilometres of shoreline past Earthquake Park and Point Woronzof, with beluga whales surfacing offshore. Swimming is not the point here, as the water peaks at only 10–12 °C in August, with Ted Stevens airport fifteen minutes from downtown.
