Beaches

White Beach is divided into three sections named after the old boat stations. Station 1, in the north, has the widest sand and many of the larger resorts; Station 2, in the middle, is the busiest part, with the D'Mall shopping area, restaurants and bars; and Station 3, in the south, is quieter, with smaller hotels. In the dry season the water is shallow and calm, which suits children. Puka Shell Beach on the north coast is wilder and less developed, Diniwid is a small cove just north of Station 1, and Bulabog Beach on the east side is Boracay's kitesurfing and windsurfing centre.

Things to do

Sunset sailing on paraw, traditional outrigger boats, leaves from White Beach every evening when the sea allows. Willy's Rock, a rocky outcrop with a small shrine in the shallows off Station 1, is a popular photo stop, and Mount Luho, the island's highest point, has a viewing deck. Island-hopping trips visit Crystal Cove and snorkelling spots around Boracay. Rules on smoking, drinking and organised events on the beach have been tightened since the reopening, so check current regulations.

Weather and best time to visit

At White Beach the sea stays above 27 °C / 81 °F all year, even in the coolest month.

Boracay's weather follows two monsoons. The north-east amihan, roughly from November to February or March, generally shelters White Beach, and the months that follow are the hot, dry part of the year. The south-west habagat, from about June to October, brings more rain and rougher seas to White Beach, and many people then swim at Bulabog instead. Seasonal green algae can appear in the dry months, and typhoons are possible in the second half of the year. Book ahead for Holy Week, Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.

Hotels and where to stay

Hotels line the whole of White Beach, with larger resorts in Station 1 and cheaper places in Stations 2 and 3. Only accommodation accredited by the Department of Tourism may accept guests, and some resorts in the north of Boracay, at Punta Bunga and Diniwid, have their own private coves.

Airport and getting there

Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan (MPH), on Panay, is a few minutes from the Caticlan jetty port, where boats cross to Boracay in about 15 minutes. Kalibo International Airport (KLO) is another gateway, around one and a half to two hours by road from Caticlan; check current domestic and international services.
