Singapore holidays
Singapore is a city-state on an island at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, and its waterfront heart is Marina Bay, ringed by the Marina Bay Sands towers, Gardens by the Bay and the skyline of the financial district. The Marina Barrage opened across its mouth in 2008, and since 2010 the bay has been a freshwater reservoir, so Singapore's swimming beaches are elsewhere, on Sentosa and along the East Coast.
Beaches
On Sentosa Island, Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong beaches are man-made crescents of sand sheltered by breakwaters, with beach clubs, showers and calm, shallow water suited to children; Palawan Beach has a suspension bridge to a small islet. East Coast Park runs for about 13 km along the south-east shore, with a sandy beach, cycling paths and seafood restaurants. The water in the Singapore Strait is often greenish rather than clear, and busy with ships at anchor. The sea temperature on this page is measured in Marina Bay, beside Gardens by the Bay.
Things to do
Gardens by the Bay has the Supertree Grove, with a nightly light show, and two cooled conservatories, the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. The SkyPark observation deck on top of Marina Bay Sands looks over the bay, and the Merlion statue stands at the mouth of the Singapore River. Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam have temples, mosques and hawker centres, and a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal crosses to Pulau Ubin, an island of old kampong houses and cycling trails. On Sentosa, Universal Studios Singapore and the cable car draw day visitors.

Singapore is hot and humid all year, close to the equator. The north-east monsoon, from about December to early March, brings the wettest weeks at its start, and the south-west monsoon runs from about June to September; between them, afternoon thunderstorms are common. Smoke haze from fires in Sumatra or Borneo can occasionally affect air quality, most often from about August to October.

Airport and getting there
Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), about 20 km east of Marina Bay, has flights from across Asia, Europe, Australia and North America; Jewel Changi, with its indoor waterfall, is linked to the terminals. The MRT runs from the airport to the city centre, and a taxi takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Sentosa is reached by the Sentosa Express monorail or the Sentosa Boardwalk from VivoCity, or by cable car from nearby HarbourFront Tower 2.
