Ko Phi Phi Don holidays
Rising from the Andaman Sea between Phuket and Krabi, Ko Phi Phi Don is the main island of Thailand's Phi Phi archipelago and the one where visitors stay. Its two curving bays, Ton Sai and Loh Dalum, sit back to back on either side of a narrow sandy isthmus, and visitors get around on foot or by longtail boat.
Beaches
Loh Dalum, on the north side of the isthmus, is shallow and calm, and at low tide the water pulls far back across the sand; after dark its beach bars stay busy. Long Beach, a short longtail ride or a coastal walk from Ton Sai, has clearer water and a view across to Ko Phi Phi Leh. In the north of Ko Phi Phi Don, Laem Tong is a quieter beach lined with resorts. The sea temperature on this page is measured in Loh Dalum Bay, on the north side of the island's narrow middle.
Things to do
Maya Bay, on neighbouring Ko Phi Phi Leh a few kilometres to the south, became famous as a location for the film The Beach (2000); swimming in the bay is restricted, visitors normally land at Loh Samah Bay on the other side of Ko Phi Phi Leh, and the national park closes Maya Bay seasonally so that the reef can recover. Boat trips also take in Pileh Lagoon, the Viking Cave and the snorkelling spots around Bamboo Island to the north-east. On Ko Phi Phi Don itself, a steep path from Ton Sai village climbs to the viewpoints above the twin bays.

Ko Phi Phi Don has a tropical monsoon climate. The main visitor season, roughly November to April, has less rain and generally calmer seas for boat trips, though conditions still vary. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas on the Andaman coast, and boat trips can be cancelled on stormy days. Days are hot and humid all year.
Hotels and where to stay
Most guesthouses, bars and dive shops on Ko Phi Phi Don are packed into Ton Sai village on the isthmus, which is lively and can be noisy at night. Resorts on Long Beach, Loh Ba Kao and Laem Tong are quieter and are usually reached by boat.

Airport and getting there
Ko Phi Phi Don has no airport. Ferries run from Rassada Pier in Phuket and from Krabi and Ao Nang, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, and speedboats are faster. The nearest airports are Phuket (HKT) and Krabi (KBV), each a road transfer from its ferry pier. Ton Sai Bay has the main arrival pier, though some resort transfers land elsewhere on Ko Phi Phi Don.
