Railay Beach holidays
Cut off from the rest of the Krabi mainland by limestone cliffs, Railay is a small peninsula in southern Thailand that can only be reached by boat. Sheer karst walls rise behind its beaches, which makes Railay a well-known rock-climbing area as well as a beach destination.
Beaches
Railay West is the main beach, a strip of soft sand between cliffs with calm water in the dry season, and long-tail boats from Ao Nang land at its southern end. Phra Nang Beach, a short walk away at the tip of the peninsula, has limestone overhangs and views of the offshore islands. Railay East is lined with mangroves and turns into mudflats at low tide, so it is used as a boat landing rather than for swimming. Tonsai Beach, north of Railay West, is the base of the climbing scene. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Railay West.
Things to do
Hundreds of bolted climbing routes cover the cliffs, and climbing schools run courses for beginners. Phra Nang Cave, at the end of Phra Nang Beach, is a shrine to a sea princess filled with wooden offerings left by fishermen. A steep, muddy path with ropes leads to the Railay viewpoint and a hidden lagoon inside the cliffs. Long-tail boats go out on tours of the Four Islands – Poda, Chicken Island, Tup and Mor – and some itineraries also stop at Phra Nang Beach, while kayaks can be rented to paddle along the cliffs. On the mainland, the Tiger Cave Temple near Krabi town has more than 1,200 steps to a hilltop shrine.

Railay is hot all year. The dry season from November to April brings calm seas and is the busiest time, especially from December to March. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings heavy showers and rougher seas, and boat crossings can be bumpier or less frequent, although many days are still sunny.
Hotels and where to stay
Resorts and bungalows fill the flat land between Railay West and Railay East, with the more expensive rooms facing the west beach. Tonsai has simpler accommodation popular with climbers, and Ao Nang, across the water on the mainland, has a much wider choice of hotels.

Airport and getting there
Krabi International Airport (KBV) is about 30 km from Ao Nang, around 40 minutes by taxi or shuttle, and long-tail boats from Ao Nang beach reach Railay in about 15 minutes. Boats also run from piers near Krabi town, and ferry services may link Phuket with Railay and Ao Nang; check the current routes and sailing dates.
