Binz holidays
Binz, officially Ostseebad Binz, is a Baltic seaside resort on the east coast of Rügen, Germany's largest island, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Its promenade is lined with white villas in the ornate "resort architecture" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the Kurhaus hotel and a pier of around 370 m at its centre.
Beaches
Binz's fine, pale sand beach runs for several kilometres along the bay of Prorer Wiek, from the southern end of the promenade north to Prora. The water gets deep slowly, which makes the central stretch by the pier a favourite with families, and hooded wicker beach chairs, the German Strandkorb, can be hired by the day or week. Signs mark separate sections for dogs and for naturists (FKK), and lifeguards watch the main beach in summer.
Things to do
The steam trains of the Rasender Roland, a narrow-gauge railway, run from Binz to Putbus and to the Baltic resorts of Sellin and Göhren, passing the hill with Granitz hunting lodge, whose tower looks out over the forest and the sea. The chalk cliffs of Jasmund National Park, with the Königsstuhl and its skywalk, lie about 20 km north, and in summer excursion boats leave the Binz pier to see them from the water. At Prora, the 4.5 km building complex planned by the Nazi regime as a mass holiday resort now holds a documentation centre, apartments and a youth hostel, next to a treetop walk. Cape Arkona, with its lighthouses, lies near the island's northern tip.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Binz gains about 5 °C (9 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
The Baltic is at its warmest in high summer, and German school holidays fill Binz in July and August. A wind blowing off the land can bring colder water to the surface and sharply lower the water temperature near the shore, and spring and autumn, when the beach is empty, are good for walks and cycling.
Hotels and where to stay
Binz's villas and hotels along the promenade and the Hauptstraße put the pier and the restaurants on foot. The north end towards Prora is quieter, with newer apartment buildings behind the dunes.

Airport and getting there
Rügen has no scheduled airport; the nearest regional options are Rostock-Laage (RLG) and, with seasonal flights, Heringsdorf (HDF) on Usedom, and Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is about 330 km away. Binz has its own railway station, with regional trains via Stralsund and some direct long-distance trains from Berlin and Hamburg. By car, the Rügen Bridge at Stralsund leads onto the island, and the drive from Stralsund takes about 45 minutes.
