Scheveningen holidays
Scheveningen is the seaside district of The Hague, a former fishing village on the North Sea whose wide sandy beach and promenade lie only a short tram ride from the Dutch seat of government. Its skyline is marked by the Kurhaus, a grand hotel from the late 19th century, and by a pier with a Ferris wheel at its end.
Beaches
Scheveningen's main beach, in front of the Kurhaus and the promenade, is broad and sandy, lined in the warmer months with beach pavilions where people eat and rent loungers; several of them stay open all year. North of the pier, the Noorderstrand is a little quieter and closer to the dunes. South of the harbour, the Zuiderstrand attracts surfers and kitesurfers, and Kijkduin further south is a smaller resort in the dunes. In summer, lifeguards watch parts of the main beach, and the wide, gently sloping sand suits children, although the North Sea often has waves and currents.
Things to do
The Pier reaches out over the sea with shops, restaurants and the SkyView Ferris wheel. Sea Life Scheveningen has an aquarium with a walk-through tunnel, and Beelden aan Zee, a museum set into the dunes by the promenade, shows modern sculpture. The harbour is lined with fish restaurants and stalls selling herring. Madurodam, a park of miniature Dutch buildings, lies between Scheveningen and the city centre of The Hague, where the Mauritshuis shows Dutch masters, including Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring; check whether the painting is on display before visiting. The dunes of Oostduinpark and Westduinpark are good for walking and cycling.
Weather and best time to visit
The sea at Scheveningen warms fastest from May to June, by about 4 °C (7 °F) in one month.
Scheveningen has a mild maritime climate, with cool summers, grey winters and wind in every season. July and August are the main beach months and the busiest, especially on sunny weekends when crowds arrive from across the Netherlands. Spring and autumn suit walks and cycling along the coast, and winter storms can be dramatic from the promenade.
Hotels and where to stay
In Scheveningen, hotels line the promenade and the streets just behind it, many with sea views, while guesthouses and apartments are spread through the older streets towards the harbour. Staying near the Kurhaus puts the beach, the pier and the tram to the city centre within a few minutes' walk.

Airport and getting there
Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) is about 25 km away, and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) about 50 km, and fast trains from Schiphol reach The Hague in around 30 minutes. From Den Haag Centraal station, trams run to the beach and the Kurhaus in about 20 minutes; check current journey planners for your date.
