About Mont-Saint-Michel
On the Normandy-Brittany border, where the Couesnon meets the English Channel, the Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel crowns a granite islet, its stacked Romanesque and Gothic stonework rising 80 metres above the water. Founded in 966 and UNESCO-listed since 1979, the abbey is reached today by a stilted bridge across the tidal flats. The surrounding bay holds Europe's largest tidal range – up to 14 metres, rushing in faster than a galloping horse. The sea peaks at a cool 16–18 °C from July to September; Rennes airport is 75 minutes by the A84.
