Gijón holidays
Gijón is the largest city in Asturias, a port and seaside city on the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain. Its centre lies between two beaches, with the old fishermen's quarter of Cimadevilla on a headland in the middle.
Beaches
Playa de San Lorenzo, a curved beach about 1.5 km long below the seafront promenade, is Gijón's main beach; at high tide much of the sand disappears, so it is worth checking the tide times, and surfers gather at its eastern end. Playa de Poniente, on the other side of Cimadevilla next to the marina, is calmer and suits families with children, and farther west El Arbeyal is a smaller, sheltered beach. The sea temperature on this page is measured off the western end of Playa de San Lorenzo, below Cimadevilla.
Things to do
Cimadevilla has narrow lanes, the Plaza Mayor and the Roman baths of Campo Valdés, and on the Cerro de Santa Catalina at its tip stands Eduardo Chillida's concrete sculpture Elogio del Horizonte. The Universidad Laboral, a huge mid-20th-century complex east of the centre, now a cultural centre, has a tower with views over Gijón, and the Atlantic Botanical Garden lies next to it. Asturian cider is poured from a height in sidrerías across the city, and the Semana Grande festival, usually held in August, brings concerts and fireworks. Oviedo is about 30 km inland, and the fishing village of Cudillero and the Picos de Europa make good day trips.

Gijón has a mild oceanic climate: summers are pleasant rather than hot, and winters are cool and rarely frosty. Rain falls in every season, which keeps Asturias green, and cloud and sea mist can linger even in summer. July, August and early September are the best months for the beach, when Gijón is also at its busiest.

Hotels in central Gijón, between Playa de San Lorenzo and the marina, put the beaches, Cimadevilla and the cider bars within walking distance. The San Lorenzo seafront has rooms with sea views, and the area around Poniente and the marina is close to the old quarter and to the train and bus stations.

Airport and getting there
Asturias Airport (OVD), near Avilés, is about 40 km west of Gijón, around 40 minutes by car, and direct ALSA buses take a little longer. Trains run from Gijón to Oviedo and on towards León and Madrid, and ALSA buses connect Gijón with the rest of Asturias and northern Spain. The Camino del Norte, the coastal route of the Way of St James, passes through Gijón.
