About Gijón
Gijón sits on the Cantabrian Sea coast of Asturias, with the old fishermen's quarter of Cimadevilla rising on a headland crowned by Eduardo Chillida's Elogio del Horizonte, a 10-metre concrete sculpture installed in 1990. East of the headland, Playa de San Lorenzo curves 1.5 kilometres of dark fine sand behind the Paseo del Muro promenade; on the harbour side, the smaller Playa de Poniente offers sheltered, calmer water. The Bay of Biscay holds 18–20 °C from July through September, with Asturias airport 30 minutes by the A-8.
