Cádiz holidays
Almost surrounded by the Atlantic, Cádiz is a port city on a narrow spit of land in Andalusia, in south-west Spain. Founded by the Phoenicians as Gadir about 3,000 years ago, it is often described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe, and its compact old town sits on the tip of the spit, ringed by sea walls.
Beaches
La Caleta, a small sandy cove between two castles, is the old-town beach of Cádiz. On the Atlantic side of the isthmus, Santa María del Mar, La Victoria and Cortadura run south in one long line of sand. La Victoria has a promenade, lifeguards and plenty of space at low tide, when the beach grows much wider, while Cortadura at the southern end is quieter, with dunes behind it. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Campo del Sur, the old town's Atlantic seafront below the cathedral.
Things to do
The cathedral, with its golden-tiled dome, has a bell tower that can be climbed for views over the rooftops. Torre Tavira, an old watchtower of the merchants who traded with the Americas, has a camera obscura that projects the streets of Cádiz onto a dish. The Roman theatre lies in the El Pópulo quarter beside the old cathedral of Santa Cruz, the Central Market is lively in the morning, and the Barrio de la Viña fills with bars around La Caleta. The Castle of San Sebastián stands on an islet reached by a causeway, and the Genovés Park runs along the sea walls. Carnival, held in February or early March depending on the year, is famous across Spain for its satirical songs. Jerez de la Frontera, with its sherry cellars, and Seville make easy day trips by train.

Sea breezes keep summers in Cádiz milder than in inland Andalusia. The levante, a strong easterly wind, can blow for days, whipping sand across the beaches, while the westerly poniente brings cooler, fresher air. Winters are mild, and most rain falls between November and March. The beaches are busiest in July and August.
Hotels and where to stay
The old town has hotels and apartments in historic buildings, close to the markets, the cathedral and La Caleta. The newer part of Cádiz along Playa de la Victoria has beachfront hotels and apartment blocks, and El Puerto de Santa María across the bay is a quieter base.

Airport and getting there
Jerez Airport (XRY) is about 45 km away and has its own railway station, with trains to Cádiz in under an hour. Seville Airport is about 125 km away. Trains link Cádiz with Jerez and Seville, and long-distance trains run to Madrid. Catamarans cross the bay to El Puerto de Santa María and Rota.
