Morro Jable holidays
At the southern tip of Fuerteventura, where the Jandía peninsula meets the Atlantic, the old fishing village of Morro Jable has grown into the island's southernmost resort town. Its harbour, whitewashed old quarter and beachfront promenade sit at the western end of a long line of pale sand that runs north-east along the coast.
Beaches
Playa del Matorral, in front of Morro Jable, is wide and gently shelving, with fine sand and lifeguards near the town in season, and a promenade runs along its town side. Further east, a lighthouse stands on the beach beside the Saladar de Jandía, a protected salt marsh crossed by wooden walkways. Further north-east the sand continues as the beaches of Jandía, Butihondo and Esquinzo in front of the resort hotels. On the wild north-western side of the peninsula, Cofete is a vast, empty beach reached by a gravel road over the mountains, but strong currents make it dangerous for swimming.
Things to do
Jandía Natural Park covers most of the peninsula, and a trail climbs Pico de la Zarza, at 807 m the highest point of Fuerteventura, with views over both coasts. Near Cofete stands Villa Winter, a remote house built for the German engineer Gustav Winter and the subject of many local legends. South of Costa Calma, about 25 km north-east of Morro Jable, Playa de Sotavento has a tidal lagoon that fills around the higher spring tides and is a well-known spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Boat trips from the port of Morro Jable go out along the coast for dolphin watching and fishing.

Fuerteventura has a dry, sunny climate with little rain, which falls mostly in winter, and the south coast around Morro Jable, sheltered by the Jandía mountains, is often calmer than the north of the island. Trade winds from the north-east blow for much of the year and are strongest in summer. Now and then the calima, a hot wind carrying dust from the Sahara, brings hazy skies. Winter is popular with visitors from northern Europe, and summer is the high season for Spanish families.

Hotels and apartments stretch from Morro Jable along the coast towards Esquinzo, most of them directly behind the beach, while the old town around the harbour has restaurants and smaller guesthouses.

Airport and getting there
Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), near Puerto del Rosario, is about 90 km north-east of Morro Jable, roughly an hour and a quarter by car along the FV-2 highway, and public buses make the trip in about two hours. Ferries sail from the port of Morro Jable to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
