Bodrum holidays
Bodrum is a resort town on the Aegean coast of south-west Turkey, on the southern shore of the Bodrum Peninsula in Muğla province. It stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, home of the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and its white houses rise around two bays either side of the Castle of St Peter.
Beaches
Bodrum town itself has only small beaches, such as Kumbahçe east of the castle, so most visitors head out along the peninsula. Gümbet, a short ride west, is lively and packed with bars; Bitez has a calm, shallow bay popular with families and windsurfers, and Ortakent and Turgutreis have longer stretches of sand. On the north coast, Türkbükü and neighbouring Gölköy are known for beach clubs on wooden piers. Many beaches are run by hotels and beach clubs that charge for loungers.
Things to do
The Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights of St John in the 15th century, houses the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology with finds from ancient shipwrecks. Little remains of the Mausoleum, but its foundations can be seen in the town, as can the ancient theatre on the hillside and the Myndos Gate. Wooden gulets leave the harbour for day trips to the bays and the island of Karaada, and ferries cross to the Greek island of Kos. At Gümüşlük, on the peninsula's west coast, fish restaurants on the water face the sunset.

Summers on the Bodrum Peninsula are hot and almost rainless, and the northerly meltemi winds of July and August keep the heat bearable and bring good conditions for sailing and windsurfing. July and August are also the busiest months, while late May, June and September are quieter.

Bodrum town puts the castle, the marina and the nightlife on foot. Bitez and Ortakent suit families, Gümbet suits a party crowd, and Yalıkavak, Türkbükü and Torba hold the peninsula's upscale resorts and marinas.

Airport and getting there
Milas-Bodrum airport (BJV) is about 35 km north-east of the town, around 40 minutes by car, and Havaş shuttle buses run to Bodrum's bus station. Dolmuş minibuses link the town with the beaches around the peninsula, and ferries sail from Bodrum to Kos.
