About Balos Lagoon
Crete's northwestern tip narrows into the Gramvousa Peninsula, where the shallow turquoise basin of Balos Lagoon stretches between the mainland and the offshore islet of Imeri Gramvousa, crowned by a Venetian fortress completed in 1579. The central sand spit traces a pink-tinged shoreline barely ankle-deep underwater, while Falasarna Beach unrolls a wilder, sunset-facing strand fifteen kilometres south along the open west coast. Sea temperatures hold between 24 and 26 °C75 and 79 °F from July through September, with Chania airport seventy-five minutes by road.
