About Athens
Greece's capital rises around the Acropolis, a limestone outcrop crowned by the Parthenon – the Doric temple to Athena built between 447 and 432 BC by Iktinos and Kallikrates and inscribed by UNESCO in 1987. South of the city, the organized Vouliagmeni Beach anchors the Athenian Riviera twelve kilometres along the Saronic Gulf, while Schinias Beach runs long and pine-backed near Marathon on the east coast. Water sits at 24-26 °C75-79 °F from July through September, with Athens International airport thirty-five minutes by Attiki Odos.
