Villasimius holidays
At the south-eastern tip of Sardinia, about 50 km east of Cagliari, the small town of Villasimius looks out over Capo Carbonara, a headland ringed by beaches and protected since 1998 as a marine protected area. Granite coves, white sand and a salt lagoon with flamingos lie within a short drive of the town centre.
Beaches
Porto Giunco is a long beach of pale sand on a narrow strip between the sea and the Notteri lagoon, with a Spanish watchtower on the headland above it. Simius, the beach closest to town, is shallow and sheltered, good for children. Punta Molentis is a small headland with a cove on each side, and in the busy season access is controlled, so check the local operator's entry and parking arrangements. Timi Ama lies beside Porto Giunco on the eastern side of the peninsula, Campulongu on the marina side, and Cala Pira is further north along the coast road. Things to do
A path climbs from Porto Giunco to the tower, with views over the beach and the lagoon, where flamingos often feed. Boat trips from the Villasimius marina go to the islands of Serpentara and Cavoli, and divers can visit an underwater statue of the Madonna near Cavoli. The Fortezza Vecchia, an old fort, stands above the marina; check opening times before planning a visit inside. Further north, the long beaches of Costa Rei are about 30 km away, and Cagliari, with its hilltop Castello quarter and Poetto beach, makes a day trip.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Villasimius gains about 4 °C (8 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers in Villasimius are hot, dry and sunny, and July and August, especially the Ferragosto holiday around 15 August, are the busiest. June and September are warm and quieter. With beaches facing different directions around the cape, one side is usually more sheltered when the mistral, the north-west wind, blows.

The centre of Villasimius has shops, restaurants and bars and is close to Simius beach. Resorts and villages spread along the coast road towards Capo Boi and around Porto Giunco and Timi Ama, and holiday flats and B&Bs fill the streets around the centre.

Airport and getting there
Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) is about 60 km from Villasimius, roughly an hour by car along the coast road, which is scenic but winding. Buses run between Cagliari and Villasimius, often taking around an hour and a half. Ferries from mainland Italy dock in the port of Cagliari, and a hire car is the easiest way to reach the beaches around the cape.
