Tropea holidays
Tropea is a small town on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, in southern Italy, with a historic centre perched on a sandstone cliff high above the sea. Below it, the church of Santa Maria dell'Isola crowns a rock that was once an island, and on clear days the volcano Stromboli shows on the horizon. This stretch of coast is known as the Costa degli Dei, the Coast of the Gods.
Beaches
The town beaches lie at the foot of the cliff and are reached by stairways: pale sand and clear water on both sides of the Santa Maria dell'Isola rock, with Spiaggia della Rotonda among the most popular. In August they fill early, so it pays to walk a little further along the shore. Quieter coves lie south of town towards Capo Vaticano: Riaci and Formicoli are a short drive away, and the headland itself, about 10 km from Tropea, has beaches such as Grotticelle.
Things to do
The old town is a web of lanes with noble palazzi, balconies over the sea and a Norman cathedral; the view from Largo Villetta across to the Isola is the picture everyone takes. Tropea's sweet red onion, grown along this coast, turns up in salads, jams and even gelato. In summer, boats leave the harbour for day trips to the Aeolian Islands, including Stromboli, and Pizzo, about 30 km north, is known for its castle and tartufo ice cream. In 2021 Tropea won Italy's televised "Borgo dei Borghi" village contest.

August is the peak, with Italian families on holiday around Ferragosto (15 August); June and September offer warm water with more room on the sand.

Most small hotels and B&Bs are in and around the historic centre, a few minutes from the beach stairways. Along the coast north and south of town, larger holiday villages and resorts, many of them all-inclusive, have their own beaches and pools.

Airport and getting there
Lamezia Terme airport (SUF) is about 60 km away, just over an hour by car. Tropea has a station on the regional line along the coast, with connections to Lamezia Terme and Rosarno for long-distance trains, and in summer boats link the harbour with the Aeolian Islands.
