Valencia holidays
Spain's third-largest city, Valencia sits on the Mediterranean coast, with the former Turia riverbed running through the city and the Albufera lagoon to the south, and combines a large medieval old town, the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences and several kilometres of wide sandy beaches within reach of the centre by tram and bus.
Beaches
The city beaches of Valencia run north from the port: Las Arenas, then Malvarrosa, then Patacona in neighbouring Alboraya, one wide strip of fine sand with a promenade, restaurants and lifeguards in summer. The shallow water suits children, and beach bars and paella restaurants line the Malvarrosa promenade. South of the port, El Saler and La Devesa lie within the Albufera Natural Park, with dunes and pine woods and far fewer buildings.
Things to do
The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, designed largely by Santiago Calatrava, holds the Oceanogràfic aquarium, a science museum and the Hemisfèric. The Turia Gardens, a park of about 9 km laid out in the old riverbed, lead from there towards the old town, with the cathedral and its Micalet tower, the Silk Exchange (La Lonja), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Central Market. Boat trips on the Albufera lagoon end with paella in the village of El Palmar, and in March the Fallas festival fills the streets with giant figures that are burned on the last night.

Valencia has mild winters and hot, humid summers, with July and August the warmest months and the busiest at the beach. Spring and autumn are pleasant for sightseeing. In autumn, torrential rain can hit the Valencian coast, sometimes linked to a DANA (also called gota fría), an isolated low-pressure system high in the atmosphere.

Ciutat Vella, the old town of Valencia, and the Ruzafa district put the sights and restaurants within walking distance. The Poblats Marítims, with El Cabanyal and the seafront of Las Arenas and Malvarrosa, are the choice for staying by the beach, and the area around the City of Arts and Sciences is modern and well connected.

Airport and getting there
Valencia Airport (VLC) is at Manises, about 8 km west of the centre, linked by metro lines 3 and 5 in around 20 to 25 minutes. High-speed trains reach Madrid in under two hours from Valencia Joaquín Sorolla station, and ferries sail from the port to Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. Trams and buses link the old town of Valencia with the seafront at Malvarrosa in about 20 to 30 minutes.
