Tarragona holidays
Built over Tarraco, the Roman capital of the province of Hispania Tarraconensis, Tarragona is a port city on the Costa Daurada in Catalonia, about 100 km south-west of Barcelona. Its Roman remains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the amphitheatre stands right above a city beach.
Beaches
Platja del Miracle, the main beach of Tarragona, lies below the amphitheatre, a short walk from the old town, with fine sand and a long promenade. To the north, L'Arrabassada is a smaller bay popular with families, and Platja Llarga, around 3 km long, backs onto pine woods. Beyond it, paths lead to quieter coves such as Cala Fonda, and further north Altafulla and Torredembarra have sandy beaches and small old towns, a few minutes away by train. Things to do
The amphitheatre, where gladiator fights were held, looks straight out to sea from the Balcó del Mediterrani viewpoint. Parts of the Roman circus survive in vaults under the old town, and the walk along the Roman walls leads up to the cathedral. West of the Rambla Nova, the Colonial Forum keeps columns of the Roman city's main square. About 4 km north of the centre stands the Les Ferreres aqueduct, known locally as the Pont del Diable. Tarragona is a stronghold of castells, the Catalan human towers, which are built at the Santa Tecla festival in September. PortAventura World lies about 10 km along the coast. By the fishing port, the Serrallo quarter has seafood restaurants and a fish market.

Airport and getting there
Reus Airport (REU) is about 15 km away, with mostly seasonal flights and buses to the city. Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is about an hour by car. Trains on the coastal line from Barcelona stop at Tarragona station by the port, while the high-speed Camp de Tarragona station lies about 10 km inland.
