Alicante holidays
Alicante is a port city of around 370,000 people on Spain's Costa Blanca and the capital of its province, set between the sea and the castle-topped Mount Benacantil. Its promenade, beaches and old quarter lie within walking distance of one another, and its airport is the main gateway for the whole coast from Dénia to Torrevieja.
Beaches
Postiguet, the city beach, begins where the palm-lined Explanada ends and sits right below the castle; it is busy but has a gentle slope and a lifeguard service in summer. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Postiguet. North of the port, Albufereta is a smaller, sheltered bay, and Playa de San Juan stretches for several kilometres of wide sand towards El Campello, with more room and hotels close to the water. Boats from the harbour reach Tabarca, a small inhabited island inside a marine reserve, in about an hour.
Things to do
Santa Bárbara Castle crowns Mount Benacantil, and a lift inside the rock carries visitors up from a tunnel opposite Postiguet beach. The Explanada de España runs along the harbour on a pavement of millions of small tiles laid in a wave pattern. The whitewashed lanes of the Santa Cruz quarter climb towards the castle, and the old town below holds the Basilica of Santa María and the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás. The MARQ archaeological museum was named European Museum of the Year in 2004. The Hogueras de San Juan festival peaks on 24 June, when its huge figures are burned across the city, and fireworks follow for several nights. TRAM line 1 runs north along the coast to Benidorm, where line 9 continues to Altea, and the UNESCO-listed Palm Grove of Elche is half an hour away.

Alicante has a sunny, dry climate with little rain, hot summers and mild winters that draw visitors all year. July and August are the busiest months on the beaches. In autumn, occasional storms can bring sudden, heavy rain.
Hotels and where to stay
The centre around the Explanada and the old town keeps the castle, restaurants and Postiguet beach close together. Playa de San Juan is better for a beach holiday, with the tram running into town, and El Campello further north is quieter.

Airport and getting there
Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC) is about 10 km south-west of the city; the C-6 bus runs to the centre in about half an hour. High-speed trains link Alicante with Madrid in a little over two hours, and ferries sail from the port to Algeria.
