La Pelosa holidays
On the north-western tip of Sardinia, just outside the village of Stintino, La Pelosa is a beach of fine white sand and shallow turquoise water at Capo Falcone. Offshore stand the Torre della Pelosa, a 16th-century watchtower on a rocky islet, and beyond it the islands of Piana and Asinara.
Beaches
The water at La Pelosa stays shallow for a long way out, which suits small children, and the sand is so fine that the beach is protected by strict rules. For most of the season, roughly from May to October, the number of visitors is capped and entry has to be booked online for a small fee, with young children exempt; towels must lie on a mat and smoking is banned. Next door, La Pelosetta is a smaller, similar beach, and Le Saline on the gulf towards Stintino is quieter and less regulated.
Things to do
Boats from Stintino cross to Asinara National Park, a former prison island where white donkeys roam among empty roads and coves, and can be explored by bike, electric car or guided tour. The Capo Falcone headland above La Pelosa has walking paths and views over the channel to Asinara, and watching the sunset from it is a summer ritual. In Stintino, the tuna-fishing museum recalls the tonnara that once shaped Stintino. Alghero, with its walled old town, and the cliffs of Capo Caccia are about an hour's drive away.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at La Pelosa gains about 4 °C (8 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers at La Pelosa are hot and dry, and July and August are the busiest months, when booking the beach early matters. June and September are warm with fewer people. The maestrale, the north-west wind of Sardinia, can blow for days, though La Pelosa is relatively sheltered by Capo Falcone and the islands offshore.
Hotels and where to stay
Hotels and holiday flats stand along the road between Stintino and La Pelosa, some within walking distance of the beach. The village of Stintino has restaurants and a small harbour, and Alghero and Sassari offer more choice for a longer trip across the north of Sardinia.

Airport and getting there
Alghero–Fertilia Airport (AHO) is the closest to La Pelosa, about 50 km away, roughly 50 minutes by car. Olbia Airport (OLB) is about two and a half hours by road. Ferries from mainland Italy, France and Spain dock at Porto Torres, about 30 km from Stintino, and a hire car is the easiest way to reach the beach, although summer buses also run from Sassari to Stintino.
