Saint-Tropez holidays
Saint-Tropez, a small port on a peninsula of the Var coast in south-eastern France, was a fishing village and a haunt of painters before the 1956 film "And God Created Woman", shot here with Brigitte Bardot, made it one of the most famous resorts on the Riviera. The town has only a few thousand permanent residents, but in summer its harbour fills with yachts and its beaches with visitors.
Beaches
The best-known beach, Pampelonne, curves for about four and a half kilometres along the open sea south of the town, in the neighbouring commune of Ramatuelle. Beach clubs such as Club 55 alternate with public stretches of fine sand, and the water deepens gently in most places. Closer to town, Les Salins is a smaller public beach in a sheltered bay, and La Ponche is a tiny cove below the old fishermen's quarter. Things to do
The Vieux Port, lined with cafés such as Sénequier and its red terrace, is the heart of the town. The 17th-century citadel above it houses a maritime history museum, and the Musée de l'Annonciade shows paintings by Signac, Matisse and other artists who worked here. On Tuesday and Saturday mornings the Place des Lices holds a market, and pétanque is played under its plane trees. The coastal path follows the shore from the town around the peninsula. Inland, the hilltop villages of Ramatuelle and Gassin look over the vineyards, and Port Grimaud, a lagoon resort built in the 1960s, lies across the gulf.
Weather and best time to visit
The sea at Saint-Tropez warms fastest from May to June, by about 5 °C (8 °F) in one month.
Summers are hot and sunny, and in July and August traffic on the single main road into the peninsula can back up for hours. May, June and September are warm and easier, and the Voiles de Saint-Tropez regatta fills the harbour with classic yachts in late September and early October. The mistral wind can bring cool, clear days.
Hotels and where to stay
Hotels in and around the old town put the harbour and restaurants within walking distance, while villas and beach hotels are spread through the hills behind Pampelonne. Sainte-Maxime, across the gulf, is cheaper and linked by boat.

Airport and getting there
Toulon-Hyères Airport (TLN) is about 50 km away and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport about 100 km, roughly one and a half to two hours by road in good traffic. The nearest train stations are Saint-Raphaël and Les Arcs; from Saint-Raphaël, buses and seasonal boats continue to Saint-Tropez, and ferries cross the gulf from Sainte-Maxime.
