Cannes holidays
Known around the world for the film festival held every May in the Palais des Festivals, Cannes is a resort city on the French Riviera between Nice and the red Esterel hills. Beyond the festival, it is a seaside town of palm-lined promenades, a steep old quarter and two islands a short boat ride offshore.
Beaches
Many stretches along the Boulevard de la Croisette are run by hotels and beach clubs under concessions, with sunbeds rented by the day, and public beaches lie between them and at the eastern end near Pointe Croisette. West of the old port, the long public Plage du Midi runs towards La Bocca and is popular with families. The Lérins Islands, reached by boat from the old port in 15–20 minutes, have quieter coves for swimming.
Things to do
La Croisette, the seafront boulevard, runs from the Palais des Festivals past the grand hotels, and handprints of film stars are set into the pavement nearby. Above the old port, the lanes of Le Suquet climb to the Musée des Explorations du Monde in the old castle, with a view over the bay. The Forville market sells local produce, and Rue d'Antibes is the main shopping street. On Île Sainte-Marguerite, the Fort Royal held the prisoner known as the Man in the Iron Mask; on Île Saint-Honorat, monks still make wine at Lérins Abbey. Nice, Antibes and the perfume town of Grasse are all easy day trips.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Cannes gains about 5 °C (8 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Cannes has warm, dry summers and mild winters. July and August are the peak beach months, and during the film festival in May hotel prices rise sharply and access to festival venues and many events is limited to accredited guests. June and September are warm and less crowded.
Hotels and where to stay
The grand hotels line La Croisette facing the sea, while the streets around Rue d'Antibes and the station have more mid-range rooms. Le Suquet has small hotels and apartments in the old town, La Californie in the hills is an upscale residential area, and La Bocca to the west is quieter and cheaper.

Airport and getting there
Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) is about 27 km away; express buses and trains via Nice reach Cannes in under an hour. Cannes station lies on the coastal line between Marseille and Ventimiglia, with direct TGV trains to Paris in about five hours.
