Hvar holidays
Off the Croatian coast south of Split, the long, narrow island of Hvar in central Dalmatia is known for lavender, vineyards and its main town, also called Hvar, whose Renaissance square and harbour fill with yachts in summer. The island's other historic town, Stari Grad, was founded by Greek settlers in 384 BC, and its field system, Stari Grad Plain, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Beaches
Most beaches on Hvar are pebbles or rock, with very clear water. Near Hvar town, the pine-shaded coves west of the harbour have beach clubs and bathing platforms, and Pokonji Dol to the east is a pebble beach within walking distance. Taxi boats cross to the Pakleni Islands opposite the town, where Palmižana has sandy patches and restaurants. Dubovica, a cove below the road to Jelsa, has a small shingle beach, and on the south coast Zavala and Sveta Nedjelja have pebble beaches below steep vineyards. Things to do
Above Hvar town, the Spanish Fortress (Fortica) looks over the harbour and the Pakleni Islands. On the main square stand St Stephen's Cathedral and the Arsenal, with a theatre opened in 1612 on its upper floor. Stari Grad has the Tvrdalj summer house of the poet Petar Hektorović, and Jelsa and Vrboska are quieter harbour towns. In June and July lavender blooms in the hills around Velo Grablje and Brusje. Boat trips go to the Blue Cave on the island of Biševo.

Hvar has long, sunny summers and mild winters. July and August are the busiest months, especially in Hvar town, whose nightlife draws young visitors. June and September are warm and calmer. The bura from the north-east and the jugo from the south-east can stir up the sea and delay catamarans.

Hvar town has the biggest choice of hotels and the busiest nightlife. Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska are calmer and suit families, and the villages on the south coast offer holiday houses by the sea.

Airport and getting there
Split Airport (SPU) is the nearest large airport. From Split, catamarans reach Hvar town in about an hour, and car ferries sail to Stari Grad in about two hours. A second car ferry links Drvenik on the mainland with Sućuraj on the island's eastern tip. Buses connect Stari Grad port with Hvar town and Jelsa, and in summer catamarans also sail on to Korčula and Dubrovnik.
