Monaco holidays
Monaco is a city-state on the French Riviera, covering about two square kilometres between the mountains and the sea. On the rocky headland of Monaco-Ville stands the Prince's Palace, home of the Grimaldi family since 1297, and across the harbour lies Monte-Carlo, which grew around its Belle Époque casino complex, including Charles Garnier's opera hall. The sea temperature on this page is for the coast at Larvotto beach.
Beaches
Monaco's public beach is Larvotto, a curved beach of pale pebbles and sand in the east of the principality, rebuilt in 2021 with a promenade and shallow, sheltered water. Beyond it, most sea access is at private beach clubs and hotel lidos, or at the beaches just across the border in France, such as Plage Mala in Cap-d'Ail.
Things to do
In Monaco, the changing of the guard takes place in front of the Prince's Palace just before noon, and the Oceanographic Museum stands on the cliff of Monaco-Ville above the sea. In Monte-Carlo, the Casino and the Café de Paris face each other across the Place du Casino, and the Japanese Garden lies near Larvotto. The Monaco Grand Prix is held on the city streets every spring.

Airport and getting there
Monaco has no airport of its own; Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is roughly 35–45 minutes away by car in light traffic, around an hour by express bus depending on your stop, and there is a helicopter shuttle. Regional trains on the coast line stop at Monaco–Monte-Carlo station.
