Cala Goloritzé holidays
Only a footpath and the sea lead to Cala Goloritzé, a white-pebble cove on the Gulf of Orosei in eastern Sardinia, in the municipality of Baunei. A limestone spire more than 100 m high rises above the beach, and a natural rock arch stands at its southern edge.
Beaches
Cala Goloritzé has white pebbles and very clear water that turns turquoise over the shallows, with freshwater springs seeping out near the shore. The cove has no facilities, so visitors bring water and food, and water shoes help on the pebbles. The cove is protected as a natural monument: boats may not land, and access for walkers is regulated, with visitor limits and a booking system, so check the current requirements and permitted entry hours before going. Further north along the same coast, Cala Mariolu, Cala Biriola and Cala dei Gabbiani are reached mostly by boat. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Cala Goloritzé.
Things to do
The path down to Cala Goloritzé starts on the Golgo plateau above Baunei and takes about an hour on the way down, longer on the steep climb back. The plateau also has the Su Sterru sinkhole and the small country church of San Pietro di Golgo. Boat tours from Santa Maria Navarrese and Cala Gonone explore the cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei; itineraries may include views of Cala Goloritzé, stops at Cala Luna and visits to sea caves. Pedra Longa, a tall rock pinnacle on the coast near Santa Maria Navarrese, is a popular stop. Experienced hikers come to Baunei for the Selvaggio Blu, a demanding multi-day trek along the cliffs.

Santa Maria Navarrese, a seaside village below Baunei with a small harbour, is the nearest base for boat trips, while Baunei itself sits on the road up to the Golgo plateau. Arbatax and Tortolì, a little further south, have more hotels.

Airport and getting there
Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) and Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) are both a few hours' drive from Baunei, depending on the route, traffic and stops. The port of Arbatax has ferry links with mainland Italy on some routes; check current schedules. A car is the easiest way to reach the Golgo plateau, where the walk to Cala Goloritzé begins.
