Cala Sa Forcanera holidays
Cala Sa Forcanera is a small cove below the Marimurtra Botanical Garden in Blanes, the seaside town where the Costa Brava begins, about 60 km north-east of Barcelona. Pine-covered slopes and rocks enclose the cove, which is accessible only from the sea.
Beaches
Sa Forcanera has a small beach and clear water, but cliffs and private land surround it and no public footpath leads down, so it is reached from the sea, for example by kayak or boat. Cala Sant Francesc, next to it, is a sheltered bay with a beach bar and calmer, shallower water that suits children. The main beach of Blanes runs along the town's promenade, and S'Abanell continues south for several kilometres of wide sand. Santa Cristina, a cove with a small hermitage between Blanes and Lloret de Mar, is popular in summer. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Cala Sa Forcanera.
Things to do
The Marimurtra Botanical Garden in Blanes, founded by the German businessman Carl Faust in the 1920s, has Mediterranean and subtropical plants on terraces above the sea and a small temple overlooking Cala Sa Forcanera. Sa Palomera, a rock at the end of the main beach, marks the southern start of the Costa Brava. The ruins of the medieval Sant Joan castle stand on a hill above the town, and the Pinya de Rosa garden has a large collection of cacti; check opening days. An international fireworks contest traditionally lights up the bay around the feast of Santa Anna in late July. Coastal paths lead from Blanes towards Lloret de Mar, and Tossa de Mar, with its walled old town, is about 20 km north.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Cala Sa Forcanera gains about 5 °C (8 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Blanes has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. July and August are the busiest months, when the small coves fill early in the day, while June and September are quieter and still warm. Autumn brings the heaviest rain, and the northerly tramontana wind can bring cooler, clearer days.

Airport and getting there
Girona–Costa Brava Airport (GRO) is about 40 km from Blanes, and Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) about 80 km, roughly an hour by car. Rodalies commuter trains from Barcelona stop at Blanes station, a short bus or taxi ride from the centre, and coaches run along the coast.
