Dubrovnik holidays
Dubrovnik is a walled city on the southern Dalmatian coast of Croatia, once the capital of the independent Republic of Ragusa. Its old town, on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, is enclosed by walls almost 2 km long, with the limestone-paved Stradun running between the Pile and Ploče gates.
Beaches
Banje, just outside the Ploče Gate, is a pebble beach with a view of the old harbour and the walls. On the Lapad peninsula, the sheltered Lapad Bay has shallow water that suits children, and Copacabana beach at Babin Kuk has water sports and a slide. Below the southern walls, the two Buža bars sit on the rocks, with ladders into the sea. The island of Lokrum, a nature reserve about 15 minutes by boat from the old harbour, has rocky swimming spots and a small salt lake.
Things to do
Walking Dubrovnik's city walls takes about two hours, with a ticket bought at the entrances by the Pile and Ploče gates. Inside the walls stand the Rector's Palace, the cathedral and the Franciscan monastery, whose pharmacy was founded in 1317. Fort Lovrijenac on its rock outside the walls, like many old town streets, served as a location for King's Landing in Game of Thrones. A cable car climbs Mount Srđ for the view over the city and the Elaphiti Islands. Popular day trips go to Cavtat, to the walls and oyster farms of Ston, and across the border to the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro.
Weather and best time to visit
The sea at Dubrovnik warms fastest from May to June, by about 4 °C (8 °F) in one month.
Dubrovnik's summers are hot and dry, and on days when cruise ships call, the old town is busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon; early mornings and evenings are calmer. In winter the bura, a cold north-easterly wind, can blow hard.
Hotels and where to stay
Rooms inside Dubrovnik's walls are mostly small apartments reached by stone steps. Ploče, east of the old town, has hotels with a view of the walls, while the Lapad and Babin Kuk peninsula has larger resort hotels, beaches and a frequent bus to the Pile Gate.

Airport and getting there
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) at Čilipi is about 20 km south-east of the city, roughly 30–40 minutes by the airport shuttle bus to the Ploče Gate, which continues to the Gruž bus station. By car from Split the drive takes about three hours, and since 2022 the Pelješac Bridge has avoided the border crossings at Neum. In summer, catamarans link Dubrovnik with Korčula, Hvar and Split.
