France beach holidays
France brings its love of food, markets and beautiful towns to the seaside. A coastal holiday might mean a Mediterranean promenade, a Breton fishing harbour or a long Atlantic beach backed by dunes. Add Corsica's mountain scenery and you have several very different journeys within one country, each with its own pace and regional cooking.
Mediterranean charm or Atlantic space?
The French Riviera combines beaches with art, gardens and old towns. Nice makes a lively city base, while smaller bays offer a different setting; Villefranche-sur-Mer pairs its colourful waterfront with the curve of its bay. Corsica is more suited to a holiday mixing the sea with drives through mountain landscapes and villages.
On France's Atlantic coast, broad sandy beaches and surf towns take over. Biarritz adds Basque food and a long surfing tradition. Brittany and Normandy offer another sort of seaside escape, with fishing ports, coastal walks and a landscape shaped by the tides. Northern France's beaches can be as much about long walks and family outings as swimming.
When to travel
Summer is the main bathing season, but the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Channel coasts have different water temperatures. For spring or autumn, build the trip around towns, food and walks, with beach time when conditions suit. A market picnic, seafood lunch or visit to a coastal museum can be as memorable as a day on the sand. In Brittany, check the tide times before a beach outing: the water can retreat a long way at low tide.
