Australia beach holidays
Australia makes the coast part of everyday life, from a morning swim and a café breakfast to a walk above the ocean. Beyond the cities lie tropical islands, long surf beaches and quieter shores beside national parks. This is a country where the journey between regions can be substantial, so a good beach holiday starts with choosing which Australia you want to experience.
City beaches, surf or islands?
Sydney combines a harbour city with an outdoor coastal lifestyle. Bondi is a natural introduction, with its beach, cafés and coastal walking route. Gold Coast holidays offer another pace: long beaches, surf culture and family attractions, with green hinterland inland from the high-rise waterfront.
Further north, the Whitsundays bring island scenery and sailing to the trip. Whitehaven Beach is a distinctive stop for pale sand and sweeping views. Western Australia offers a different coastal journey, while Tasmania appeals to travellers who want beaches alongside walks and wilder landscapes. These places are not neighbouring day trips; keeping the itinerary within one region often makes for a more relaxed stay.
Choosing the season
Australian seasons are reversed from those in Europe and North America. Southern beach trips often centre on the warmer months around December to February, while the tropical north has wet and dry seasons. Plan for the specific region rather than the country as a whole. At patrolled beaches, swim between the red and yellow flags and follow local advice.

Good to know
On patrolled beaches, swim between the red-and-yellow flags marking the lifeguard-supervised area; a solid red flag means no swimming.
