Cable Beach holidays
Cable Beach runs for about 22 km along the Indian Ocean just west of Broome, a pearling town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It takes its name from the undersea telegraph cable laid from Broome to Java in 1889, and its white sand is framed by red cliffs at the southern end.
Beaches
The main access point of Cable Beach, at the southern end near the resorts, has a patrolled swimming area in the dry season, and north of the rocks a clothing-optional section begins, where four-wheel drives may use the sand subject to seasonal, tidal and turtle-nesting restrictions. From about November to May, box jellyfish and Irukandji stingers can be in the water, so swimmers should follow the signs and lifeguards. Gantheaume Point, at the southern tip, has red pindan cliffs, and at very low tides dinosaur footprints around 130 million years old appear on the rocks. Town Beach on Roebuck Bay, close to the centre of Broome, is calmer but strongly tidal.
Things to do
Sunset camel rides along Cable Beach are the classic outing. On Roebuck Bay, the Staircase to the Moon appears on a few nights around the full moon between about March and October, when the rising moon lights up the tidal flats. Chinatown and the old pearling luggers tell the story of Broome's pearling industry, and Sun Pictures, which opened in 1916, still shows films under the stars. Longer trips include seasonal seaplane tours to the Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay and road trips north onto the Dampier Peninsula, where the access rules of individual communities, including at Cape Leveque, should be checked first.

Broome has a tropical climate with two seasons. The dry season, roughly May to October, brings sunny, warm days and cooler nights and is the main tourist season. The wet season, roughly November to April, is hot and humid, with heavy storms and a risk of tropical cyclones. Tides at Broome can rise and fall by up to about 10 m, so Cable Beach changes a lot during the day.

Airport and getting there
Broome International Airport (BME) is in the town, about 10 minutes by car from Cable Beach, and flights from Perth take about two and a half hours. By road, Broome is roughly 2,200 km north of Perth, and Darwin lies about 1,900 km to the east.
