Rarotonga holidays
Rarotonga is the main island of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific: a volcanic island about 32 km around, with a jungle-covered interior that rises to the peak of Te Manga at 652 m. A fringing reef surrounds the island, and the lagoon inside it, which varies greatly in width and is widest around Muri, is where the swimming and snorkelling happen. Avarua, the capital, is on the north coast.
Beaches
Muri Beach on Rarotonga's south-east coast faces a wide, shallow lagoon with four small islets (motu); some can be reached on foot at low tide, the rest by kayak. On the south coast, Titikaveka is known for snorkelling in calm water close to shore, and on the west coast the lagoon in front of Aroa Beach is a traditional marine reserve (rāʻui). Stay inside the reef: the passages through it carry strong currents out to the open sea.
Things to do
The best-known hike on Rarotonga is the Cross Island Track, which climbs through the rainforest past the rock spire of Te Rua Manga, known as the Needle. Glass-bottom and snorkelling boat trips leave from Muri Beach to the motu, and on Saturday mornings Avarua fills with the Punanga Nui market. Many visitors add a day trip to the lagoon of Aitutaki, a short flight to the north.

On Rarotonga the seasons are the reverse of Europe's: the warmest water comes in the southern summer, from January to April, while May to October is drier and less humid. The cyclone season runs from November to April.

On Rarotonga, Muri is the main resort area, with bungalows and villas right on the lagoon. The west coast around Arorangi is quieter and faces the sunset.

Airport and getting there
Rarotonga International Airport is at Nikao, just west of Avarua, and most coastal accommodation is within roughly half an hour's drive of it. Most visitors fly in from Auckland, a flight of about four hours. On the island, buses run around the coastal road in both directions.
