Menorca holidays

Menorca is a Spanish island in the Balearic archipelago, in the western Mediterranean, with rural landscapes between the port towns of Ciutadella and Maó. The island has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1993, and a holiday can combine sandy coves, prehistoric monuments and walks along the coast.

Beaches

Cala Macarella and nearby Cala Turqueta have pale sand, pine trees and limestone shores on the south coast. Cala Galdana has a resort beside its bay, while Son Bou offers a longer sandy beach. The northern coast has a different landscape, with beaches such as Cavalleria exposed to northerly winds. Pick a beach according to the day's conditions rather than assuming every cove is calm. We measure the sea temperature shown on this page near the beach at Cala Macarella, where the photo was also taken.

Things to do

Ciutadella has an old town, a cathedral and a narrow harbour; Maó offers waterfront walks and boat trips on its natural harbour. Visit Naveta des Tudons to see a prehistoric stone burial monument, or walk a section of the Camí de Cavalls, the route around the island. Monte Toro provides a viewpoint over the countryside, and the fishing village of Fornells makes another stop on the northern coast.

Weather and best time to visit

From June to October the sea at Menorca is warmer than 20 °C / 68 °F.

Summers are hot and generally dry, with July and August bringing the main holiday crowds. Late spring and early autumn offer alternatives for walking and visiting towns. The tramuntana can make the north coast windy, and winter is cooler and wetter. Check seasonal opening dates, since beach services and transport do not all run throughout the year.

Hotels and where to stay

Ciutadella and Maó suit visitors who want restaurants and town life. Cala Galdana, Son Bou and the resorts around Cala'n Bosch offer stays near beaches, while Fornells is a base for the north. There are no hotels directly at Cala Macarella, so plan the journey from your accommodation.

Airport and getting there

Menorca Airport (MAH), near Maó, is the island's airport. An airport bus links with Maó's bus station for onward connections. Hire cars help reach rural areas, but access to some coves is restricted in summer. Check current bus services and parking rules before a trip to Macarella.
