Palma holidays
Palma is the capital of Mallorca and the largest city in the Balearic Islands, spread around a wide bay on the island's south coast. The Gothic cathedral, La Seu, rises above the seafront park of Parc de la Mar, and on the hill above the west of the bay stands Bellver Castle, a 14th-century Gothic fortress with a rare circular plan.
Beaches
Palma is a city with beaches rather than a beach resort. East of the centre, Playa de Palma stretches for several kilometres from Can Pastilla to S'Arenal: a wide sandy beach with a gentle slope that suits children. Closer in, Can Pere Antoni is a city beach within walking distance of the cathedral. West of the port, Cala Major is a small sandy bay next to Marivent, the royal family's summer residence, with more sheltered water.
Things to do
Palma's old town is best on foot: La Seu and the royal Almudaina Palace beside it, then the lanes of the historic centre up to the market halls. Bellver Castle has views over the whole bay. From the centre, the vintage wooden train of the Ferrocarril de Sóller runs through the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, to the town of Sóller, and the hill village of Valldemossa is a popular half-day trip.

Palma works as a city break all year; the sea is warmest in late summer, swimming is generally most comfortable from June to October, and spring and autumn suit walking and cycling in the Tramuntana.

In Palma, the old town puts the cathedral, the Passeig Marítim and the port within walking distance. Playa de Palma is the classic strip of hotels with direct beach access, while Cala Major and Illetas to the west are quieter and more upmarket.

Airport and getting there
Palma de Mallorca airport (Son Sant Joan) is about 15 minutes by road from the centre and closer still to Playa de Palma. Ferries connect Palma with Barcelona and Valencia.
