Ses Illetes holidays
Just south of Ibiza, reached only by boat, Formentera is the smallest of the four main Balearic Islands: about 20 km long and mostly low-lying, with the raised La Mola plateau in the east, with salt flats, pine woods and a long list of pale sandy beaches. Its seagrass meadows are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture.
Beaches
Ses Illetes, on the narrow Es Trucadors peninsula in the north of Formentera, is a long strip of white sand with shallow, clear water inside the Ses Salines Natural Park. On the other side of the same peninsula, Llevant is quieter and more exposed to the wind. Migjorn runs for several kilometres along the south coast, Es Pujols is the busiest resort beach, and Cala Saona in the west is a small sandy cove known for sunsets. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Ses Illetes, on the western side of the peninsula.
Things to do
Formentera is made for cycling, with signposted green routes linking the villages and beaches. The lighthouse at Cap de Barbaria stands at the end of a road across bare rock in the south, and the Far de la Mola sits on the cliffs of the eastern plateau, near El Pilar de la Mola, where a craft market is held on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from May to October. Sant Francesc Xavier has a fortified church, and flamingos and other waterbirds can be seen around the Estany Pudent lagoon and the nearby salt flats.
Weather and best time to visit
From June to November the sea at Ses Illetes is warmer than 20 °C / 68 °F.
Formentera has hot, dry summers and mild winters. July and August are the busiest months, when Ses Illetes and the ferries fill up. June and September are warm and calmer. In summer, cars and motorbikes pay a fee to enter the natural park at Ses Illetes, and the number of vehicles allowed on Formentera is limited.
Hotels and where to stay
Es Pujols has most of the hotels and restaurants on Formentera, Migjorn has beach hotels on the south coast, and La Savina, by the port, is practical for ferries. Sant Francesc Xavier is small and central.

Airport and getting there
Formentera has no airport. Visitors fly to Ibiza Airport (IBZ), travel about 20 minutes to the port of Ibiza Town and take a ferry to La Savina, which takes about 30 minutes on a fast boat and around an hour on a car ferry. In summer, some ferries also run from Dénia on the Spanish mainland. Bikes, scooters and cars can be hired in La Savina.
