About Carthage

On the northern shore of the Gulf of Tunis, Carthage spreads across a low coastal ridge first settled by Phoenician colonists in 814 BC and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979. Byrsa Hill carries the Punic foundations and Roman cisterns, while the seafront below slides into shallow, sandy water that continues north toward La Marsa and Sidi Bou Said. The Mediterranean climbs from 22 to 26 °C between June and September, peaking in August, with Tunis-Carthage airport ten minutes inland.
