Navagio holidays
Navagio, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is a cove on the north-west coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos, enclosed by sheer limestone cliffs, with the rusting hull of a ship lying on its white pebbles. The wreck is the Panagiotis, a cargo ship that ran aground in the cove in 1980.
Beaches
Navagio can only be reached by sea, on boat trips from nearby Porto Vromi and other harbours on the island; because of rockfalls from the cliffs, landing on the beach has been restricted, so check the current rules before booking a trip that promises time ashore. Elsewhere on Zakynthos the beaches are quite different: Alykes and Alykanas on the north-east coast have long, shallow sandy beaches that suit children, and Tsilivi near Zakynthos town is a busy resort beach. Things to do
The clifftop viewpoint near the village of Anafonitria looks straight down into Navagio; check current access restrictions before driving up and stay within the permitted areas. Laganas Bay in the south is part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, where loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beaches in summer, and boat trips go out to Marathonisi, a small island in the bay. In the north, boats leave from Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari for the Blue Caves, sea caves where the light turns the water a vivid blue. The Keri cliffs in the south-west are a favourite sunset spot, and Zakynthos town has a harbour-front square named after the poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the words of the Greek national anthem.

Zakynthos has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, and most of the rain falls between October and March, which keeps the island green. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, while June and September are quieter and still warm. North-westerly winds in summer can make the sea rough on the west coast, and boat trips to Navagio are cancelled when the waves are too high.

Laganas is the party resort of Zakynthos, Tsilivi and Alykes are more family-oriented, and Vasilikos in the south-east is quieter, with hotels among olive groves. Villages in the north, closest to Navagio, have small hotels and villas.

Airport and getting there
Zakynthos International Airport "Dionysios Solomos" (ZTH) is about 5 km south of Zakynthos town, close to Laganas and Kalamaki. Ferries cross from Kyllini on the Peloponnese coast to Zakynthos town in about an hour, and the viewpoint above Navagio is roughly an hour's drive from the town.
