Beaches

Calpe's two main beaches lie on either side of the Peñón de Ifach. To the south, Playa del Arenal-Bol is about a kilometre of fine sand next to the old town, with a gentle slope into the water that suits children. To the north, Playa de la Fossa (also called Levante) runs along a promenade of bars and restaurants. For snorkelling, try Cala del Racó, a small cove at the foot of the Peñón.

Things to do

The classic walk in Calpe is the path up the Peñón de Ifach, which climbs through a short rock tunnel to the summit views; the summit trail needs a free advance booking all year, and daily visitor numbers are limited. In the old town, the stepped Carrer del Puchalt is painted in the colours of the Spanish flag, and at the port the afternoon fish auction can be watched from a public gallery. Inside the town, the Las Salinas salt lagoon is where flamingos are often seen, and beside Arenal-Bol the Baños de la Reina are the remains of a Roman fish farm cut into the rock.

From June to October the sea at Calpe is warmer than 20 °C / 68 °F.

In Calpe, July and August are the busiest months; June and September bring warm sea with fewer people, and the dry, mild winters make Calpe a year-round town even when the sea is too cool for most swimmers.

In Calpe, the old town and Arenal-Bol put shops, the port and the Peñón trail within walking distance. La Fossa is lined with apartment towers and is the choice for a sea view from the terrace.

Airport and getting there

Calpe is about an hour by road from Alicante-Elche airport on the AP-7 motorway, and about an hour and a half from Valencia airport. Benidorm is around 25 minutes south by car; TRAM line L9 connects Calpe with Benidorm, where you can change to line L1 for Alicante.
