Capri holidays
Rising steeply from the Gulf of Naples off the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula, Capri is a limestone island in southern Italy's Campania region with two towns, Capri and Anacapri. Ferries land at Marina Grande, and a funicular climbs to the Piazzetta, the small square at the centre of Capri town.
Beaches
The coast of Capri is mostly cliffs, so its beaches are small, pebbly or built on rocks, and many are run as beach clubs with loungers and ladders into deep, clear water. Marina Piccola, on the south side, has two pebble coves and views of the Faraglioni. La Fontelina is a rock-platform beach club right below the Faraglioni, the Bagni di Tiberio on the north coast sit beside the ruins of a Roman villa, and Punta Carena, by the lighthouse at the island's south-western tip, is known for sunsets. Things to do
The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is entered by small rowing boat through a low opening, and visits stop when the sea is rough. Boat tours around Capri pass the Faraglioni rock stacks and sea caves. On land, the ruins of Villa Jovis, the palace of Emperor Tiberius, crown the island's eastern cliff, and the Gardens of Augustus look down on Via Krupp, a zigzag path to Marina Piccola that is sometimes closed after rockfalls. In Anacapri, a chairlift rises to Monte Solaro, and Villa San Michele has gardens with views over the gulf.

Capri has hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. From June to August the island is busiest in the middle of the day, when day-trippers arrive from Naples and Sorrento, and evenings are calmer. May and September are warm and less crowded, and many hotels and beach clubs open only from about spring to autumn.
Hotels and where to stay
Capri town, around the Piazzetta, has upmarket hotels close to the shops and restaurants, while Anacapri is quieter and a little cheaper. Staying overnight means seeing the island before and after the day visitors.

Airport and getting there
Naples International Airport (NAP) is the nearest; from the airport it is a short ride to the port of Naples, where fast ferries reach Capri in about 50 minutes. Ferries also run from Sorrento, which is closer, and in summer from towns on the Amalfi Coast. On Capri, buses, taxis and the funicular link Marina Grande with Capri and Anacapri, and visitors do not need a car.
