Beaches

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés share a long stretch of golden sand backed by the Maspalomas Dunes, a nature reserve of shifting sand. Further west, the resorts of Arguineguín, Puerto Rico and Amadores have smaller, sheltered bays; Amadores is a crescent of pale sand protected by breakwaters, with calm water that suits children. In Las Palmas, Las Canteras is a city beach of about three kilometres whose natural reef, La Barra, calms the sea in front of it. Things to do

In the mountains at the centre of Gran Canaria, a short trail leads to Roque Nublo, a volcanic rock pinnacle, where visits must be booked in advance during regulated hours, and the village of Tejeda looks out over deep ravines; nearby, the Pico de las Nieves viewpoint lies beside Morro de la Agujereada, the highest summit. Puerto de Mogán, a small fishing port with canals and flower-covered houses, is often called "Little Venice". In Las Palmas, the old quarter of Vegueta holds the Cathedral of Santa Ana and the Casa de Colón museum. Teror, with its basilica and wooden balconies, and Agaete, with the harbour of Puerto de las Nieves, are good stops in the green north.

Gran Canaria is warm all year, which makes winter the high season for visitors from northern Europe. The south is sunnier and drier than the north, where the trade winds pile up clouds against the mountains. Now and then the calima, a hot wind from the Sahara, brings hazy, dusty days. Summer on the coast is warm rather than scorching.

Hotels and where to stay

Playa del Inglés is a large resort with a lively bar and club scene. Maspalomas and Meloneras have more upmarket hotels near the dunes and the lighthouse, Puerto Rico and Amadores suit families, with apartments on the hillsides above the bays, and Puerto de Mogán is smaller and quieter.

Airport and getting there

Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is on the east coast at Gando, about 25 km from Las Palmas and 30 km from Playa del Inglés; the drive to Amadores and Puerto de Mogán takes around 45 minutes. Global buses link the airport with the capital and the southern resorts. Ferries from Las Palmas and Agaete connect Gran Canaria with Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, and longer crossings sail to mainland Spain.
