Beaches

Praia do Tamariz is a sandy beach with a seawater pool beside the pier at its eastern end; when the Atlantic is rough, follow the local bathing flags. Praia da Poça in São João do Estoril is a wider stretch of sand popular with families, and Praia da Azarujinha, also in São João do Estoril, is a small cove tucked below the cliffs. The Paredão, a promenade of around 3 km, runs along the shore from São João do Estoril to Cascais and is good for walking or running between beaches. Carcavelos, a few stops east on the train, is a long open beach known for surfing. Lifeguards watch the main beaches during the bathing season.

Things to do

Casino Estoril, with the Parque do Estoril gardens in front, is at the heart of the resort. Cascais, a short walk along the promenade, has an old centre, a marina and the Boca do Inferno, a chasm in the cliffs where waves crash in rough weather. Beyond Cascais the coast road passes Guincho beach on the way to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Sintra, with the Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle in its wooded hills, is about half an hour inland, and the Estoril Circuit hosts motor racing.

Weather and best time to visit

Estoril has mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers, when July and August are the busiest months on the beaches. The Atlantic keeps the water cooler than in the Mediterranean, and in summer a northerly wind often picks up in the afternoon. June and September are good months for walking the coast and visiting Sintra with fewer crowds.

Hotels and where to stay

Hotels in Estoril cluster around the casino gardens and along the seafront, within walking distance of Tamariz and the train station. Monte Estoril, between Estoril and Cascais, has smaller hotels and guesthouses close to the promenade, and Cascais, one stop further on the train, adds more hotels near its old centre.

Airport and getting there

Lisbon Airport (LIS) is about 30 km from Estoril, roughly half an hour by car outside rush hour. The Cascais railway line from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré station stops at Estoril, next to Praia do Tamariz, and continues to Cascais, making a car unnecessary for a beach stay.
