Freeman's Bay holidays
Freeman's Bay is a small, sheltered bay just inside the entrance to English Harbour, on the south coast of Antigua, with Galleon Beach along its shore. Yachts anchor across the water from Nelson's Dockyard. The dockyard and the forts around the harbour entrance were listed by UNESCO in 2016 as the Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites.
Beaches
Galleon Beach runs for about 400 metres around Freeman's Bay, from The Inn at English Harbour to a group of beach cottages, with calm water and shade under fixed wooden shelters. The entry is sandy and gently shelving near the hotel end, which suits children; elsewhere a rocky ledge runs along the water's edge, so watch for sea urchins. A reef just offshore is good for snorkelling, and sea turtles are sometimes seen in the bay. Pigeon Beach, on Falmouth Harbour a few minutes' drive west, is a popular local beach, and Half Moon Bay, on the east coast about half an hour away, is a wide crescent of sand open to the Atlantic waves. Things to do
A rocky path from Galleon Beach leads in about 20 to 30 minutes to the Pillars of Hercules, column-like rock formations shaped by erosion at Charlotte Point; go at low tide, in shoes that grip. Fort Berkeley, built in 1704 on a narrow spit across the harbour entrance, is reached on foot from Nelson's Dockyard, where Horatio Nelson served in the 1780s and the Dockyard Museum occupies the former Naval Officer's and Clerk's House. Shirley Heights, a restored military lookout on the hill above the bay, looks over English and Falmouth harbours and is known for sunset barbecues with live music; check the current programme before visiting. Antigua Sailing Week usually takes place in April, with English and Falmouth harbours serving as bases for visiting yachts; check the organiser's current programme for routes and venues.

Freeman's Bay is a sheltered anchorage, although winds can funnel around the surrounding hills and conditions can become choppier when the wind turns southerly. Antigua is warm and sunny for most of the year. The drier months from about December to April are also the yachting season, when the anchorage is busy; the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and some hotels and restaurants around the harbour close for part of summer and autumn, so check opening dates before travelling.

Airport and getting there
V. C. Bird International Airport (ANU), in the north of Antigua, has flights from the UK, North America and the Caribbean; the drive across the island to English Harbour takes about 35 to 45 minutes, and taxis use fixed fares. Galleon Beach is accessible by road, with limited parking. Ask locally about water-taxi availability from Nelson's Dockyard.
