Pink Beach holidays
Pink Beach, known in Indonesian as Pantai Merah, is a small cove on Komodo Island, inside Komodo National Park in the Lesser Sunda Islands. Its sand takes a pink tint from fragments of red organisms that live on the reef and wash up among the white grains. The national park was founded in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
Beaches
The pink colour of Pink Beach is strongest at the waterline and in bright sunlight, and softer when the sand is dry. A coral reef begins a few metres from the shore, so snorkelling straight off the beach is possible, with reef fish and sometimes turtles; currents in Komodo National Park can be strong, and it is best to snorkel with a guide or boat crew. Padar Island, between Komodo and Rinca, also has pink-tinged sand below its well-known viewpoint, and Kanawa and Kelor islands closer to Flores are common swimming and snorkelling stops.
Things to do
Komodo dragons can be seen on ranger-guided walks at Loh Liang on Komodo Island and Loh Buaya on Rinca, where rangers set the route and keep visitors at a safe distance. The climb to the viewpoint on Padar looks over three bays with sand of different colours. Manta rays often feed at Manta Point, and Taka Makassar is a sandbank that appears at low tide. Komodo National Park entry fees, permits and rules on which islands can be visited change from time to time, so check the current situation with an operator before booking.

Komodo has a tropical climate with a long dry season, usually from about April to November, and a rainy season from about December to March, when seas can be rougher. July and August are popular months to visit, so book boats and accommodation ahead. The islands are dry and brown for much of the year and turn green after the rains.

Komodo village offers homestays, but most visitors stay in Labuan Bajo on Flores, the gateway town for Komodo National Park, or on liveaboard boats that spend several nights among the islands.

Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo is the gateway; check current flights from Bali or Jakarta for your travel dates. From the harbour at Labuan Bajo, speedboats reach Pink Beach in around one to two hours, and traditional wooden boats take longer; most visits are part of a full-day or multi-day boat trip that combines several islands.
