Diamond Beach holidays
Reached by a staircase cut into a limestone cliff, Diamond Beach lies on the east coast of Nusa Penida, an island south-east of Bali in Indonesia. White sand, rock pinnacles in turquoise water and the cliff behind have made Diamond Beach, opened to visitors only in the late 2010s, a regular stop on day trips from Bali.
Beaches
The steps down to Diamond Beach are narrow and can be slippery, and waves on the east coast of Nusa Penida often break hard on the shore, and swimming at Diamond Beach is prohibited; enjoy it from the dry sand or the clifftop, follow the signs and stay clear of the breaking waves. Atuh Beach, next door, is a sheltered bay with warungs, sunbeds and calmer water on quieter days. On the west coast, Crystal Bay is the usual place for a swim and sunset, while Kelingking Beach, below the headland shaped like a dinosaur, is reached by a steep and demanding path, and most people stay at the viewpoint above it.
Things to do
Near Diamond Beach, the viewpoint at the Rumah Pohon tree house and the Thousand Islands viewpoint look over the rocky islets of the east coast. The west of Nusa Penida has Broken Beach, a sea arch around a round lagoon, and Angel's Billabong, a rock pool that becomes dangerous when waves wash over it. Snorkelling and diving boats visit Manta Point, where manta rays gather, and the neighbouring islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, linked by a bridge, are a short boat ride away. Roads on Nusa Penida are narrow and hilly, so east–west crossings take time.

Nusa Penida has the same tropical climate as Bali, with a dry season from about April to October and a rainy season from about November to March. The dry months bring south-easterly winds and larger swells on exposed coasts. July, August and the Christmas holidays are the busiest times, when the viewpoints are crowded around midday.
Hotels and where to stay
Most hotels on Nusa Penida are in the north, around Toyapakeh, Ped and Sampalan near the boat landings, and on the west coast near Crystal Bay. A few clifftop villas and bungalows stand near Atuh and Diamond Beach on the east coast.

Airport and getting there
Nusa Penida has no airport. Fast boats connect Sanur on Bali with ports in northern Nusa Penida such as Sampalan, Toyapakeh and Banjar Nyuh, usually in well under an hour; check the arrival port, crossing time and sea conditions with the operator. Sanur is around 30 to 60 minutes by road from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), depending on traffic. Bali charges a tourist levy for foreign visitors and Nusa Penida has its own fee; check current rules and fees before travelling.
