Barr Al Jissah holidays
Barr Al Jissah is a resort in a mountain-ringed cove on the Gulf of Oman, south-east of Mutrah in Muscat, the capital of Oman. It opened in 2006 as Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, and in January 2026 its three hotels on the bay – Al Waha, Al Bandar and Al Husn – passed to Hilton management.
Beaches
The main beach at Barr Al Jissah is a crescent of sand between rocky headlands, and swimming conditions vary with the weather and the state of the sea. Al Husn, on a clifftop above the bay, has a separate private beach for adults only. Sea turtles have nested on the resort's beaches, and nesting areas may be marked off in season. Outside the resort, Qantab is a fishing village with a small public beach and boats for hire. The sea temperature on this page is measured in the cove off the resort beach.
Things to do
Boats from Qantab and from Marina Bandar Al Rowdha run dolphin-watching trips and visit sea caves, rock arches and snorkelling spots along the coast, including the inlets of Bandar Khayran. In Muscat, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors on set mornings, with a dress code; Mutrah has its corniche and souq, and Old Muscat has Al Alam Palace between the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts. The Royal Opera House Muscat stages concerts in the cooler months, and snorkelling trips to the Daymaniyat Islands leave from marinas north-west of the city.
Weather and best time to visit
The sea at Barr Al Jissah warms fastest from April to May, by about 3 °C (5 °F) in one month.
Muscat has a hot desert climate. From about October to April the days are warm and sunny and the nights mild, which makes this the main season for beach holidays. From May to September it is very hot and often humid, so outdoor activities are best early in the morning. Rain is rare, and cyclones from the Arabian Sea are infrequent but can bring storms and flooding, mostly in May–June or October–November.
Hotels and where to stay
The three hotels of the Barr Al Jissah resort share the bay: Al Waha is geared towards families, Al Bandar occupies the centre of the beachfront, and Al Husn is the adults-only hotel on the headland. Jumeirah Muscat Bay lies in the next cove, and hotels in Qurum and Shatti Al Qurum put you on Muscat's long city beach.

Muscat International Airport (MCT) is about 45 km north-west of Barr Al Jissah, roughly 45 minutes by taxi or hotel transfer along the Muscat Expressway and the coast road. Muscat is an international gateway with connections across the Gulf, Europe and Asia; check the routes available for your dates.
