Sharm El Sheikh holidays
A resort city at the southern tip of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh sits where the Gulf of Aqaba meets the Red Sea, with desert mountains behind it and coral reefs just offshore. Hotels line the coast from Nabq in the north to Ras Um Sid and the old harbour of Sharm El Maya in the south, and the reefs made the city a centre for diving and snorkelling.
Beaches
Much of the Sharm El Sheikh shore is coral, so many hotel beaches reach deep water along a jetty or pontoon over the reef, and reef shoes help. Naama Bay, the original resort, has a sandy, sheltered bay with calmer water that suits children, while Sharks Bay, Ras Um Sid and Nabq are known for snorkelling straight from the shore. Corals are protected: they must not be touched or stood on. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Ras Um Sid, in the south of the city.
Things to do
Ras Mohammed National Park, at the southern tip of Sinai, protects reefs, mangroves and desert, and boat trips stop at its walls of coral. Other boats head north to the reefs of the Strait of Tiran. The Nabq Protected Area has mangroves and dunes along the coast north of the airport. In town, the Naama Bay promenade and SOHO Square are busy in the evening, and the Old Market in Sharm El Maya sits next to the Al Sahaba Mosque. Quad and jeep trips go into the desert, often ending with a Bedouin dinner, and longer excursions reach Saint Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai, about three hours away by road.

Sharm El Sheikh lies in the desert, so rain is rare and the sun shines almost every day. Summer is very hot, and from June to September the middle of the day is best spent in the shade. From December to February the days are warm, but evenings are cool and the wind can make the sea choppy. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons.

Naama Bay is walkable, with bars, shops and restaurants. Sharks Bay and Nabq have large all-inclusive resorts, quieter and with reefs in front, and the older hotels of Hadaba and Ras Um Sid sit on the cliffs above the reef.

Airport and getting there
Sharm El Sheikh International Airport (SSH) lies north of Naama Bay, about 20 minutes by taxi, and receives direct and charter flights from many European cities. Cairo is roughly 500 km away by road, through the tunnel under the Suez Canal.
