Eilat holidays
Eilat is Israel's southernmost city, a resort on the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea, between the borders of Egypt and Jordan. South of the city centre, the Coral Beach Nature Reserve protects a fringing coral reef that snorkellers can reach from the shore by access bridges.
Beaches
Coral Beach Nature Reserve, run by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, has walkways over the shallow reef flat so that snorkellers reach deeper water without standing on the coral, a marked snorkel trail and an entrance fee. Nearby beaches along the southern shore, such as Lighthouse Beach and Princess Beach, also have reef close to the shore; reef shoes help on the stony entries. North Beach, in the city by the promenade and the hotels, is sandy and calm, with sun loungers and water sports. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Coral Beach.
Things to do
The Coral World Underwater Observatory, on the southern shore, has an underwater viewing room built into the reef and aquariums with sharks and turtles. At Dolphin Reef, visitors can watch bottlenose dolphins from floating platforms, and guided swimming and diving may also be available. Inland, the Red Canyon is a short hike through a narrow sandstone gorge, and Timna Park, about 25 km north, has ancient copper mines and the rock formations called Solomon's Pillars. Many goods and services in Eilat are exempt from VAT, although exceptions apply. Organised day trips cross into Jordan to Petra and Aqaba, and the Taba border crossing leads to Sinai; check current border and visa rules.

Eilat has a desert climate with almost no rain. Winters are mild and sunny, which makes Eilat a winter-sun destination from about November to March, and spring and autumn are warm. Summers, from about June to September, are very hot and dry, with shade and water essential in the middle of the day. A northerly wind blows along the gulf on many days.
Hotels and where to stay
Most hotels in Eilat stand around North Beach, the lagoon and the marina, within walking distance of the promenade and restaurants. A few hotels face the reef on the southern Coral Beach shore, a short drive or bus ride from the centre.

Airport and getting there
Ramon Airport (ETM), which opened in 2019, lies about 19 km north of Eilat, roughly 20 minutes from the centre by taxi; bus journey times depend on the route and stop. Ramon serves Eilat's domestic flights, while international services vary by season and operating conditions, so check flights for your dates. Buses from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem take about five hours through the Negev Desert. Check current travel advice for southern Israel before booking.
