Lindos holidays
Lindos, on the east coast of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands, is a village about 50 km south of Rhodes Town. Its white houses climb a hillside below an ancient acropolis that crowns a rock more than 100 m above the sea, and cars stay outside the village, whose lanes are for walking.
Beaches
Below Lindos village, the main beach curves around Lindos Bay, with sand, calm water and loungers for hire, which makes it easy with children. Next to it, the smaller Pallas beach has a jetty for the excursion boats. On the south side of the acropolis, St Paul's Bay is an almost enclosed cove where, according to tradition, the apostle Paul landed, and its chapel is a popular place for weddings. Vlicha Bay, a short drive north of Lindos, is lined with resort hotels.
Things to do
The Acropolis of Lindos holds the Temple of Athena Lindia, a Hellenistic stoa and the walls of a castle of the Knights of St John; the path up is steep and exposed, so it is best climbed early in the morning. In Lindos village, the Church of the Panagia has frescoes, and the old captains' houses have carved doorways and courtyards paved with pebble mosaics. Across the bay, a path leads to a round ancient tomb traditionally linked with Kleoboulos, one of the Seven Sages. Rhodes Town, with its medieval old town on the UNESCO list, is about an hour away, and Tsambika beach and Anthony Quinn Bay lie along the same coast.

Summers on Rhodes are long, hot and dry, and in July and August day-trippers fill the lanes and the acropolis path by mid-morning. The meltemi, a northerly wind, blows through much of the summer. May, June and September are calmer and better for walking.

Inside Lindos, the choice is mostly small guesthouses and restored captains' houses, often with a roof terrace facing the acropolis. Larger hotels stand at Vlicha Bay to the north and at Pefkos and Lardos to the south.

Airport and getting there
Rhodes Diagoras airport (RHO), on the island's north-west coast, is about 60 km from Lindos, roughly an hour by car. KTEL buses run from Rhodes Town to Lindos several times a day, and ferries from Rhodes port sail to Piraeus and the other Dodecanese islands.
