Antalya holidays
Antalya is the largest city on Turkey's Mediterranean coast and the gateway to the Turkish Riviera, built on cliffs above a wide bay with the Taurus Mountains behind it. At its heart is Kaleiçi, the walled old town around a Roman harbour, and long beaches run out of the city on both sides: pebbly Konyaaltı to the west and sandy Lara to the east.
Beaches
Konyaaltı Beach runs for about 7 km west of the centre, with pebbles, clear water that deepens quickly and a landscaped beach park behind it. Lara Beach, east of the city, has fine sand and a gentler slope that is easier for small children, and it is lined with large all-inclusive hotels. Right below the old town walls, Mermerli is a small beach for a swim between sightseeing.
Things to do
Kaleiçi is made for walking: Hadrian's Gate, built for the emperor's visit in 130 AD, the Fluted Minaret (Yivli Minare) and lanes of Ottoman houses leading down to the old harbour, where boat trips start. The Antalya Museum, home to finds from the region, is closed while it is rebuilt, but the ancient cities themselves make easy day trips: Perge, Aspendos with its Roman theatre, and Termessos high in the mountains. Near Lara, the Lower Düden Waterfall drops off the cliffs straight into the sea, and the Tahtalı cable car near Kemer climbs to 2,365 m.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Antalya gains about 4 °C (7 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers here are hot and dry, and in July and August afternoon temperatures often climb above 35 °C / 95 °F, so sightseeing is best done early. Spring and autumn are the pleasant months for the ancient sites.
Hotels and where to stay
Kaleiçi has small hotels in restored Ottoman houses inside the old walls. Konyaaltı suits a city stay with the beach across the road, and Lara is the district of big resort hotels near the airport. Belek, about 35 km east, is known for golf courses and all-inclusive resorts.

Airport and getting there
Antalya Airport (AYT) lies about 10 km east of the centre, 20 to 30 minutes by road, and the AntRay tram links it with the city. Lara is the closest resort area to the airport; Kemer to the south-west and Belek and Side to the east are reached by transfer along the coast.
