Nissi Beach holidays
Nissi Beach is a bay of white sand and shallow turquoise water on the south-east coast of Cyprus, about three kilometres west of the centre of Ayia Napa. It takes its name from the small rocky islet just offshore ("nisi" means island in Greek), and it is the best-known beach of a resort that grew from a fishing village into one of the island's busiest holiday towns.
Beaches
At Nissi Beach itself, a shallow sandbar often lets people wade out to the islet, depending on the sea, and the gently sloping sand suits children. Beach bars host parties in summer, above all around the Nissi Bay Beach Bar at the western end. Makronissos, a little further west, is a string of small sandy coves beside rock-cut tombs from ancient times. West of the town, Landa is a quieter beach between Nissi and Makronissos, and Konnos Bay below Cape Greco is a sheltered cove with pines down to the sand.
Things to do
Cape Greco National Forest Park, at the south-eastern tip of the island, has sea caves, cliffs and the natural arch of Kamara tou Koraka; the caves can also be seen from the boat trips that leave Ayia Napa harbour. A separate rock arch, the Love Bridge, stands on the coast near the town's sculpture park. In the town centre, the walled Ayia Napa Monastery dates from the Venetian period, and the Thalassa museum tells the island's maritime history. WaterWorld, a water park themed on Greek mythology, lies on the edge of town, and in summer the streets around the main square fill with bars and clubs.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Nissi Beach gains about 4 °C (6 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers on the south-east coast of Cyprus are long, hot and almost rainless, and July and August bring the biggest crowds and the loudest nights. May, June, September and October are calmer and still warm. Winters are mild, with most of the year's rain, and many hotels close for a few months.
Hotels and where to stay
The hotels at Nissi Beach sit right on the sand, a short bus ride from the centre. Staying in central Ayia Napa puts nightlife within walking distance, and Protaras, about ten kilometres north-east around Cape Greco, is quieter and popular with families.

Airport and getting there
Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is about 50 km away, roughly 40 minutes by car; shuttle buses run from the airport to Ayia Napa. Paphos Airport, on the other side of the island, is about two hours by road. Cyprus drives on the left, and local buses link Nissi Beach with the town centre and Protaras.
